Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) Regulations Exchange Visitor Program (J-1)

Program changes through the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) and Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS)*

Commencing January 1, 2003, all exchange visitors sponsored by New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) must do the following:

  • Report to the Office of International Students and Faculty (OIS&F) in Room 140 Fenster Hall upon arrival.
  • Provide the Responsible Officer (RO) or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program with the following:
                   Address in your own country
                   Address in the United States
                   E-mail address
                  Telephone number
                  Passport number
                  J-1 visa number

  • Inform the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), using Form AR-11, of any address change within 10 days of that change. Inform NJIT, through the OIS&F, as soon as you change your address.
  • If a student, you must be in full-time status and be taking the required number of credits each semester (at NJIT, this is 12 credits, unless you have been permitted by the RO or ARO to take less than 12 and be certified full-time).
  • If a visiting professor, or research scholar, under the purpose of your visit to the U.S., any work, for example, a lecture off-campus at another institution, must be approved by the RO or ARO. You are advised strongly to consult with the RO or ARO at the OIS&F before any arrangement is made either on your behalf by NJIT, or by yourself.
  • Within two months of completion of your work as a professor or research scholar, and in your final semester as a student, you must consult with the RO or ARO in the OIS&F. It is important that NJIT knows when you will be completing your purpose of being in the U.S.
  • All dependents of a J-1 visa holder, spouse and children, must each possess DS-2019 Forms after January 30, 2003.
  • Any J-2, dependent, wishing to become a full-time student, must apply to USCIS for a change of status from J-2 to J-1. Please note, if, as a J-2 (dependent of J-1), you wish to take an avocational course for your pleasure, you may do so without applying to USCIS for a change of status. Change of status MUST be applied for before you request to become a full-time student pursuing a program, for example, a degree, with a clearly defined goal.
  • A J-2 student who was currently enrolled in full-time study had until March 11, 2003 to apply to change status to J-1.

* SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) is the new web-based, integrated reporting system being used by the Department of State (DoS) and USCIS to maintain electronically the progress and status of F-1 (students) and J-1 (exchange visitors).
